Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

0

Do you have a special event, like a wedding or graduation, coming up that you want to refresh your smile for? The ZOOM! teeth whitening treatment we offer at Ramona Family Dentistry removes stains and discoloration from dingy or yellowing teeth and gets them shining bright again. Though many patients are eager to have whiter teeth, they may hesitate because they’ve heard that it can be uncomfortable, or result in teeth sensitivity. Just what are the facts: does the treatment hurt and will you experience sensitivity after a treatment? Read on to find out.

What To Expect During Your Treatment

Whether or not you experience discomfort during your ZOOM! teeth whitening treatment will depend on whether you experience tooth sensitivity to begin with. Though the ZOOM! process is safe and effective even for patients with sensitive teeth, some of these patients may still be experience some temporary discomfort during treatment. This is due to the fact that the microscopic pores in their teeth, called tubules, are open during a ZOOM! treatment, in order for the whitening agent to penetrate deep into the tooth surface. If you have sensitive teeth or you are concerned about having pain during your teeth whitening treatment, talk to Dr. Sean Feely before your treatment; he will be able to thoroughly examine your teeth and answer any questions and concerns you have.

Tooth Sensitivity after Treatment? How to Manage It

Some patients may experience some mild to moderate tooth sensitivity after a ZOOM! whitening treatment; these symptoms don’t occur with every patient, and are easily managed in cases where they do occur. If you experience discomfort in the hours or days following a ZOOM! whitening treatment, take ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain medication. Avoid hot and cold foods and beverages for a couple of days. Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth, and use lukewarm water when rinsing. Try breathing through your nose instead of your mouth as much as possible, as airflow on your teeth will cause discomfort and increase sensitivity.
