Oral Sedation PatientAn estimated 75 percent of Americans experience some form of anxiety about going to the dentist, and nearly 15 percent of Americans avoid going to the dentist altogether because of this fear. If you fall into one of these categories, we have good news: there is a way to get the dental care you need, stress-free — thereby avoiding the costly and often painful results of neglecting dental visits due to anxiety or fear.

At Ramona Family Dentistry, we offer a variety of oral sedation techniques, all of which have been proven to be both effective and safe, that help the patient remain relaxed and free of anxiety during their dental procedure.

WHAT IS ORAL SEDATION AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Oral sedation is a form of sedation that is administered through a pill that you take before your procedure. The sedative effect of the pill will place you in a relaxed state where you are still conscious during the dental procedure, but are no longer suffering from feelings of stress, anxiety or fear. In this state, you will be able to communicate with Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. normally.

Oral Sedation DentistryThe sedative pill is typically taken about an hour before your appointment, though, in some cases, Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. may instruct you to take the pill as early as the evening before your procedure. And since oral sedation does not provide pain relief, it is typically used in tandem with a local anesthetic, which is used to numb the area being treated. After treatment, it will take about 24 hours for the full effect of the sedation to wear off; because of this, you should arrange for someone to drive you home from our office after your visit.

At Ramona Family Dentistry, Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. offers the latest oral sedation options to ensure you experience a safe and comfortable dental visit with us. He and his staff are trained to implement these medications in the safest manner, in a monitored environment. For more information on the specific types of oral sedatives used at Ramona Family Dentistry, talk to Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. or a member of his friendly and knowledgeable staff.

FIND OUT IF SEDATION DENTISTRY IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Your safety is of utmost importance to us. Prior to administering sedation medications, we will thoroughly screen you to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for sedation dentistry. We will ask you about your past medical history, medications and any current health conditions you may have. Certain medications and health conditions can cause adverse reactions and compromise the safety of sedation dentistry. Upon evaluating your complete medical history, we will be able to determine whether sedation dentistry is safe for you, and if so, which method is the best to use.

FAQs ABOUT SEDATION DENTISTRY

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry is very safe. Minor side effects include slight drowsiness and dry mouth. Complications are very rare. Our team will review all possible side effects with you prior to treatment.

All sedation medications are administered by trained and experienced dental professionals who will monitor you all throughout treatment to ensure that you are safely and comfortably sedated at all times.

When is sedation dentistry used?

Sedation dentistry is safe and can be used for virtually any dental procedure. From routine cleanings and fillings to oral surgery, sedation dentistry can help put patients at ease as they receive the dental work they need. Our sedation dentistry techniques can make the placement of dental crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers and implants easy and comfortable. They can also make complex/extensive dental treatments like full mouth reconstruction or smile makeover, which are completed over the course of several hours and/or visits, feel like they happened in a moment.

Will I feel pain during my dental appointment?

One of the benefits of sedation dentistry is that you will not feel any pain during treatment. If necessary, our team may use a local anesthetic in addition to the sedation medication to maximize your comfort.

Will I be asleep?

No, sedation dentistry will not put you to sleep. Instead, you will enter a very relaxed and dream-like state, and you will be able to respond to our team’s verbal cues and commands and answer our questions.

How will I feel after my dental treatment?

Immediately after your treatment, you may feel slightly groggy due to the effects of the sedation medications. These effects are only minor and should wear off quickly.

Will I be able to drive home after my treatment?

No, you will need to enlist a loved one to drive you home from our office.

Will I have any memory of treatment?

Thanks to sedation dentistry, you will have little, if any, memory of your dental treatment.
