If you’re unhappy with the look of your smile, porcelain veneers are a simple and yet very effective solution. At Ramona Family Dentistry, we use porcelain veneers to provide our patients with smiles they can be proud of. Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that mimic the look of your natural tooth enamel. They are bonded to teeth in order to alter their size, shape and/or color, transforming a previously broken or imperfect smile into one that is beautiful, and yet still natural in appearance.
WHAT CAN PORCELAIN VENEERS FIX?
Porcelain veneers can be placed on some or all of your teeth, as needed, and are an ideal solution for fixing the following dental issues:
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
- Eroded enamel
ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR VENEERS?
You may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers if you:
- Have good oral health. Cavities and other dental issues will need to be addressed prior to the placement of porcelain veneers.
- Have sufficient tooth enamel. Veneers adhere to tooth enamel, so there must be a sufficient amount of enamel present for successful placement.
- Have small gaps or spaces between teeth that do not require extensive treatment with orthodontics.
- Have stains and/or discoloration that do not respond to teeth whitening.
- Do not clench or grind your teeth. Clenching and grinding teeth, or biting down on hard surfaces can crack and damage veneers.
- Understand that the porcelain veneer placement process is irreversible.
Candidacy for porcelain veneers is determined on a case-by-case basis. Our team will meet with you to evaluate your teeth and oral health during a personal evaluation. If you are not a good veneers candidate, we will discuss and recommend alternative treatments that can better achieve your desired goals.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PORCELAIN VENEERS?
Porcelain veneers offer a number of benefits. First, they are less invasive than other treatments used to restore a natural tooth appearance, such as dental crowns. They are crafted using your unique specifications so they blend seamlessly into your mouth; no one will know you have veneers! In addition, veneers are highly resistant to staining; more so than composite veneers.
For the right candidate, porcelain veneers are a cost-effective alternative to orthodontics. Unlike braces and Invisalign, which can cause some discomfort, porcelain veneers should not cause any discomfort during and after they are placed. Patients who do not wish to undergo teeth whitening because of possible tooth sensitivity can also benefit from veneers. Finally, veneers require minimal maintenance and can be cleaned just like natural teeth.
HOW ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS PLACED?
You can have a full set of veneers applied to your teeth (full veneers) or apply them to specific teeth that need correcting. In the latter case, the porcelain will be custom made to match the natural color of your teeth.
Porcelain veneer placement typically requires two office visits; however, with new digital CEREC technology, Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. can customize and fabricate your porcelain veneers in just one visit with digital scans instead of messy impressions and inconvenient temporaries. During your dental visit, Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. will remove a small amount of enamel from the surface of the tooth or teeth where the veneers will be placed. He will then take X-rays and create digital scans/pictures of your teeth that will be used to custom-make your veneers. (If the veneers will be applied to only some of your teeth, Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. will use a color shade guide to make sure the veneers closely match the color of your natural teeth.)
Once the veneers have been made (a process that typically takes several hours), they will be tried on to make sure they fit beautifully before having them placed and bonded to your teeth permanently. Dr. Nathan Christensen, D.D.S. and Dr. Hemant Sachdeva D.D.S. will first check that the veneers properly match and fit the teeth, trimming them if necessary. When the proper size and fit are established, he will use dental cement to adhere the veneer to the tooth or teeth. A special curing light will then be used to activate chemicals in the cement so that it bonds to the tooth.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR PORCELAIN VENEERS?
To maintain your beautiful porcelain veneers, it is important to keep up with good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing. Having regular dental cleanings at our office — during which we can deep-clean teeth and polish the veneers — is also important to maintain your veneers long-term.

FAQs ABOUT PORCELAIN VENEERS
Does the placement of veneers hurt?
The veneer placement process is not painful. A local anesthetic is used to numb the treated tooth to minimize discomfort.
Will my porcelain veneers slip out of my mouth?
Porcelain veneers are specifically designed for the best possible fit. They are custom-molded using impressions of your teeth and bonded into place using a strong dental adhesive, so you can smile without worrying that the veneers will slip or fall out.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime after treatment; you will be able to return to your normal activities immediately after. However, you may experience some temporary sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures due to the removal of a thin layer of enamel. This should subside within a few days.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With good oral hygiene and maintenance, your veneers can last for many years.
How much do porcelain veneers cost?
The cost of porcelain veneers varies, depending on the number of veneers needed. Our team can provide you with a cost estimate during an in-office consultation.
